Why I Bought the DMM Renegade — Four Years On

I bought the Renegade four years ago on the advice of our instructor when I was learning to trad climb in the Peak District. I’ve climbed on it ever since, and the most useful thing I can tell you in this DMM Renegade review is that there is no wear to report.

The first reason I’d buy it again is space. There is plenty of room for all my gear, which makes organising a rack easy — and on the rock, I feel that makes a real difference. DMM gives the Renegade seven gear loops, and I use the rear one as my racking loop at the back. DMM says that rear loop is there to keep belay kit separate from the main rack, which is precisely what I like.

The second is fit. The waist and leg loops are fully and easily adjustable, and as a very thin climber I find it fits me perfectly. I also like being able to slide the waist belt round to centre it properly. DMM calls this a floating waistbelt, and says it keeps the padding and gear loops centred however many layers you’re wearing.

Design & Features

I found it very comfortable from day one, and it has stayed an all-day harness through every season since. for long mountain trad pitches through to multi-day mountain routes. The waistbelt is closed-cell foam with a firm internal spreading plate for lumbar support on hanging belays, and the padding is ventilated mesh for breathability. Slide Lock buckles handle adjustment on the waist and leg loops, and four Vault slots take ice screw holders for winter. It is certified to EN 12277:2015 Type C, and DMM guarantees it for three years against defects in materials or manufacture.

I found it very comfortable from day one as an all-day harness through a seasons. After tightening the buckle you can slide the belt so the gear loops sit exactly where you want them, which also avoids lopsided loops if you’re between sizes. All seven loops earned their keep on summer days and winter routes.

DMM Renegade vs Renegade 2: Which One Is on Sale?

The naming is confusing. DMM now sells this harness simply as the Renegade (product code HM103RD, sizes S/M/L), but many UK retailers still list the same harness as the Renegade 2 or Renegade 2.0, at the same 395 / 415 / 450 g. It is one harness under two names.

The original Renegade is a different, older harness. UKHillwalking’s review of it gives 485 g in size M, and Trailspace’s Renegade 2 review notes that the second version swapped plastic gear loops for fabric ones. If a review quotes a heavier weight or plastic loops, it is describing the old model.

Two more things to watch when comparing listings: some retailer copy still says two Vault slots, whereas DMM’s current page lists four; and at least one European retailer lists “four gear loops and seven carabiner slots” — DMM’s own figure is seven gear loops.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Seven gear loops, with a rear loop that keeps belay kit separate
  • Floating waistbelt keeps the padding and gear loops centred
  • Fully adjustable waist and leg loops with Slide Lock buckles
  • Closed-cell foam and internal spreading plate for lumbar support
  • Four Vault slots for ice screw racking
  • Four years on my harness with no wear to report

Cons

  • No dedicated haul loop — Trailspace’s reviewer flags this for big multi-pitch routes
  • Some owners on DMM’s own review page report the front of the harness slipping when heavily racked
  • Heavier than sport-focused harnesses: 415 g in size M against 385 g for the Mammut Ophir 3 Slide 2.0
  • Only three sizes, S to L, and listed as men’s only

DMM Renegade Review: Final Verdict

The bottom line of this DMM Renegade review: it is a trad and all-round harness built around racking — seven gear loops, a floating waistbelt that keeps them centred, and full adjustment for layers. Four years in, mine shows no wear, and it’s the best trad climbing pick in our harness comparison.

If you mostly climb sport and want something lighter and lower-profile, read our Black Diamond Solution review, or compare all six in our full climbing harness comparison.
