Van Parking & Logistics – Complete Guide
El Chorro has multiple parking options to suit different needs — whether you prioritise being close to the crags, staying connected for remote work, or finding a peaceful overnight spot. Here’s every option laid out clearly.
Overnight Parking
Main Climber Parking (Under Trees)
GPS: 36.908643° N, -4.747024° W
The go-to overnight spot for climbing visitors. Set under large trees with a peaceful, natural atmosphere — well-established and regularly used by vanlifers. Comfortable for several days.
⚠️ Note: Zero facilities (no water, no toilets). Cell coverage limited under tree canopy — poor Starlink performance. Come fully self-sufficient.
Park4Night Secluded Spot
GPS: 36.904325° N, -4.778986° W
Completely isolated, incredibly peaceful, with excellent open sky. Perfect for Starlink and mobile connectivity. Genuinely special — if you can only stay one night, choose this one.
→ Download Park4Night app to find this and similar spots.
Day Parking
Main Sector (Bottom of Crags)
GPS: View on Google Maps
Located right at the base of the main climbing crags — just a short walk uphill to routes. Can be tight on busy days, but you’ll find a spot. Once parked, you’re immediately at the climbing.
Alternative Sector
GPS: View on Google Maps
If the main parking is full, this alternative gives you access to different sectors and helps spread the crowds. The area is extensive enough that multiple access points make sense.
Access to Climbing Areas
⏱️ Approach Times
5–15 minutes from overnight parking · 2–5 minutes from day parking · uphill hiking on well-marked trails.
🗺️ Navigation
Clearly established paths throughout the area. Spanish authorities have marked climbing zones well — easy for first-timers.
👥 Avoiding Crowds
The area is so large you can escape crowds by exploring different sectors. Having multiple day parking options makes this easy.
Nearest Supplies
Stock up in Álora (10–15 km) before arriving. Mercadona supermarket there has everything you need at normal prices. El Chorro village has a small supermarket but it’s limited and expensive. Several B&Bs and small hotels are also available near El Chorro town if you prefer comfort over van camping.
Logistics Tips
🍽️ Food & Water
Stock up in Álora. No water sources at parking areas — bring plenty from town.
📡 Connectivity
Main parking: limited cell, poor Starlink. Park4Night spot: excellent cell and Starlink. Choose based on your needs.
🚗 Roads
Decent but can be narrow on approach. Slow down on winding sections. All spots accessible for standard vans.
⚠️ Touristy Town
El Chorro town is very touristy on weekends (Caminito del Rey). Head directly to crags or the Park4Night spot for solitude.
🌞 Seasons
January is perfect. October–April ideal. Summer is very hot. Winter occasionally rainy but generally excellent.

The Climbing – 200+ Routes of Pocketed Limestone
El Chorro is one of Spain’s most iconic climbing destinations — a massive crag system with 200+ sport routes spread across 20+ sectors on exceptional pocketed limestone. The atmosphere blends genuine climbing culture with proximity to Caminito del Rey: climb in the morning, hike one of Europe’s most spectacular trails in the afternoon, enjoy Andalucían views with Spanish wine in the evening.
Main Sectors
Escalera Árabe
Most accessible and popular sector. Routes 4a–6c, excellent for progression and warming up. The go-to starting point for first-timers.
Frontales (Bajas / Medias / Altas)
Multi-tiered sector with routes from 4a (lower) to 7a (upper). Superb rock quality and variety — a sector you’ll keep returning to.
Las Encantadas
Beautiful sector with technical climbing and excellent pockets. Worth seeking out once you’ve warmed up on the main walls.
Makinodromo
Popular sport climbing sector with solid bolting and consistent grades. Reliable and well-maintained throughout.
Cotos
More remote sector with excellent rock quality and fewer crowds. Worth the extra walk when the main sectors are busy.
El Polvorín
Hidden gem sector with brilliant routes and a fantastic atmosphere. One of those places that rewards explorers.
Plus 14+ more sectors spread throughout the gorge — the area is genuinely vast.
Rock Quality & Grade Distribution
The rock is characterised by deep pockets and excellent features on grey and red limestone formations. Routes are well-bolted with modern 2-bolt anchors, properly spaced. This is authentic mountain climbing in a dramatic gorge — not a sport climbing park.
🟢 Beginner (4a–5c)
~40% of routes. Start at Escalera Árabe and lower Frontales. Excellent for building confidence and technique.
🟡 Intermediate (6a–6b)
~40% of routes. The sweet spot for most climbers. Great variety across multiple sectors.
🔴 Advanced (6c–8c)
~20% of routes. Proper test pieces in the upper sectors. Multi-pitch options in the 4a–6a range also available.
Multi-Pitch Opportunities
El Chorro offers excellent multi-pitch routes, especially in the Frontales sector where you can climb the full height of the wall on solid limestone. Routes range from 4a–6a and provide proper rope management experience. The rock quality and anchor systems are reliable.
Beginner-Friendly?
Absolutely. El Chorro is one of Spain’s best beginner climbing destinations. Protection is solid, routes are well-bolted, rock quality is excellent, and there are plenty of easy introductory routes. The sheer number of sectors (20+) means you can find exactly the right grade for progression. Start at Escalera Árabe and build systematically.
Why El Chorro Stands Out
Massive choice — you’ll never run out of things to climb.
Multiple areas to explore and escape crowds on busy weekends.
Excellent progression from 4a upward — genuinely beginner to expert.
Solid limestone for rope practice on proper mountain routes.
Unique climbing + hiking combination in the same destination.
Genuine and welcoming — Spanish climbers mixed with internationals.
Local Community & Atmosphere
El Chorro has a genuine climbing community mixed with international visitors. Unlike some famous climbing areas, local Spanish climbers are welcoming and helpful. The area feels like a proper mountain destination, not a tourist commodity. The proximity to Caminito del Rey adds unique character — you climb in the morning, hike in the afternoon, and enjoy stunning Andalucían views all day.
Caminito del Rey – The Iconic Hiking Trail
Caminito del Rey is one of Europe’s most spectacular walking trails — a narrow footpath carved into a limestone gorge, originally built in 1905 for workers at a hydroelectric plant. Restored in 2015, it’s now a stunning and accessible hiking experience with a century of history behind it.
📏 Length
7.7 km total, accessible from El Chorro. A complete circuit through the gorge.
⛰️ Difficulty
Moderate — some steep sections but not technical. Anyone with basic fitness can complete it.
⏱️ Time
3–4 hours for the full walk at a comfortable pace.
🎟️ Tickets
~€10. Book in advance online — sells out quickly in spring. 10–15 min walk from climbing areas.
The perfect combination: Climb in the morning, hike Caminito in the afternoon. Two completely different perspectives on the same stunning Andalucían landscape. Spend 2–3 days here, rotate between climbing sectors, and do the Caminito at least once.
Best Times to Visit – Season Guide
El Chorro is climbable nearly year-round, but seasons matter a lot due to temperature and crowds.
🌸 Spring (Mar–May)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best season. Perfect temps (18–25°C), everything green and blooming. Prime time for sport and multi-pitch. Expect more climbers but conditions are exceptional.
🍂 Autumn (Sep–Nov)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent. Warm but not too hot (20–28°C). Fewer crowds than spring. Lower reservoir water levels open up some additional lower sectors.
❄️ Winter (Dec–Feb)
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good. Mild temps (10–18°C), mornings can be cool. South-facing sectors like Frontales and Poema de Roca get sun all day. January is genuinely excellent.
☀️ Summer (Jun–Aug)
⭐⭐ Too hot. 35–45°C in the sun. Only viable with very early starts (before 10am) in north-facing sectors. Most climbers avoid El Chorro in summer.
Rain note: When it does rain, limestone takes 24–48 hours to dry. Routes near the reservoir can seep for days after heavy rain. Always check forecasts and have a backup plan. Routes on overhangs dry fastest.
🚐 Van Life Pro-Tip: Chasing Winter Sun
El Chorro is a winter paradise, but if a cold front hits the mainland, the Canary Islands offer the most reliable climbing weather in Europe.
🧗 Gear Check: Long limestone pitches (30m+) are the norm here. Don’t get caught short—an 80m rope is highly recommended for Málaga crags. Check out our 2026 Rope Review for the best options.

Why We Loved El Chorro
El Chorro is rare — it’s not just a climbing destination, it’s a complete mountain experience. Climb world-class routes in the morning, hike Caminito del Rey in the afternoon, enjoy stunning Andalucían views with Spanish wine in the evening. The combination is genuinely special and unlike any other climbing destination we’ve visited.
🌤️ January Weather
Cool enough for comfortable climbing, warm enough for enjoyable hiking. Clear skies, spectacular winter light on the Caminito. One of the best conditions we’ve experienced anywhere.
🤝 The Community
Despite the touristy town, the climbing community at El Chorro is genuine and welcoming. Spanish climbers mixed with internationals — collaborative, not competitive.
🏛️ The History
Routes established for decades, Caminito del Rey with its 1905 heritage, the hydroelectric plant history. Climbing here feels connected to something larger than just the rock.
🔁 Would We Return?
100% yes. 3–5 days rotating climbs and hikes is one of our favourite climbing experiences. If you have the time, 2 weeks is even better.

Frequently Asked Questions – El Chorro
Is El Chorro suitable for beginner climbers?
Yes, but choose your sectors carefully. El Chorro has excellent beginner-friendly areas but is primarily known for challenging sport climbing and exposed multi-pitch routes.
Best beginner sectors:
- Poema de Roca: Brilliant for beginners. Loads of well-bolted routes in the 5a–6b range. Vertical to slightly overhanging, great holds, easy access.
- Frontales Bajos: Lower section with easier routes (4a–6a). Great for building confidence and technique.
- Sector Balconcillo: Good variety for mixed-ability groups.
Gear needed: 70m rope (essential — many routes require it), 15–18 quickdraws, helmet, and prusiks for multi-pitch.
Safety note: El Chorro’s limestone can be brittle on less-travelled routes. Always wear a helmet, test holds, and be cautious of loose rock. Consider hiring a guide for your first few days.
Where can I park overnight in a van near El Chorro?
El Chorro is not as van-friendly as some Spanish climbing destinations due to recent crackdowns on wild camping, but options exist.
Official campsites (safest option):
- Camping Parque Ardales: €12–18/night. Showers, WiFi, electricity. ~5 min drive to main sectors.
- Camping El Chorro: Similar prices and facilities. Popular with climbers — good community.
Wild camping (use with caution): Andalucía has tightened wild camping laws — fines can be €200–600. If you choose to wild camp: no fires, no noise, no rubbish, move on after 1–2 nights. Check recent reports on Park4Night for current beta on what’s currently tolerated.
Water refill: Both official campsites allow water refills. Petrol station in El Chorro village is another option.
How do I get the guidebook and topos for El Chorro?
The essential resource is the El Chorro Guide by Juan Hofer & José Mancera (~€35–40). Comprehensive coverage of all main sectors including Caminito del Rey routes.
- Online: Order before your trip from official distributors.
- Locally: The Olive Branch in El Chorro village may stock it — also the social hub for climbers, great for current beta.
- Digital: Rockfax app — useful on-crag, but the physical book is better for route planning and multi-pitch logistics.
Guidebook sales directly fund rebolting and route maintenance. Support the people who keep El Chorro safe and accessible!
What are the best seasons for climbing at El Chorro?
- Spring (Mar–May): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best — perfect temps (18–25°C), ideal for everything.
- Autumn (Sep–Nov): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent — warm, fewer crowds than spring.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good — mild (10–18°C), south-facing sectors sunny all day.
- Summer (Jun–Aug): ⭐⭐ Too hot — only viable with very early starts in shaded sectors.
If you’re planning multi-pitch routes on the Caminito del Rey walls, avoid peak summer heat and strong winds. Spring and autumn are ideal for these committing routes.
How long should I stay at El Chorro?
- Minimum: 4–5 days — sample the main sectors, squeeze in one multi-pitch route. Good for a long weekend or if combining with other Andalucían areas.
- Ideal: 1–2 weeks — explore multiple sectors, tick classics, attempt multi-pitch. The sweet spot for most climbers.
- Extended: 2–4 weeks — with 1,000+ routes, you could easily spend a month without repeating climbs. Winter months are ideal for longer stays.
Budget: Camping €12–18/night · Food (self-catering) €10–20/day · Daily total: around €30–45 is realistic.
Don’t miss the Caminito del Rey walkway — book tickets in advance online (~€10). Sells out quickly in spring and gives a completely different perspective on the gorge.
Our experience: We spent 10 days and felt it was just about right. We climbed multiple sectors, did one multi-pitch, had rest days for exploring, and left satisfied but not burnt out. If you have the time, 2 weeks is even better.
